A child prodigy who ranked first in statewide examinations in Punjab, India at age 11, Dr. Saini was admitted to college at 15 and earned a merit scholarship to the prestigious Government Medical College, Amritsar at just 16. He graduated at 21 with Gold Medals in both Medicine and Pharmacology — achievements that launched a career of relentless excellence.

Dr. Saini came to England and pursued post-graduate Internal Medicine training, becoming a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, London. During this training, he fell in love with the subspecialty of Gastroenterology. He then moved to New York City, where he was accepted into the highly competitive GI fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine / Beth Israel Medical Center — then one of the world's premier programs for hands-on endoscopic training. There, he had the rare privilege of training one-on-one under Dr. Hiromi Shinya, the physician who helped design the modern colonoscope and whose landmark studies of colon polyps at Beth Israel became the scientific foundation for screening colonoscopy to prevent colon cancer. Dr. Saini also trained under Dr. Jerome Siegel and more than 30 of New York City's top gastroenterologists, with special expertise in therapeutic ERCP.

Dr. Saini has been in private practice at Fashion Island, Newport Beach since 1998 and has performed over 20,000 colonoscopies with an outstanding safety record. In 2004, Dr. Robert Egan — renowned physician to legendary actor John Wayne — chose to pass his practice on to Dr. Saini after observing his work at Hoag Hospital, where Dr. Saini served as Chairman of the GI Division. Dr. Egan continues to endorse our practice to his former patients to this day.

Dr. Hughes is a talented, rigorously trained gastroenterologist who earned his place in medical school on a merit scholarship — a testament to his academic distinction and commitment to medicine from an early stage in his career.

After completing his gastroenterology fellowship, Dr. Hughes spent his first two years in clinical practice in Phoenix, Arizona, where he honed his skills across the full spectrum of GI care — from diagnostic and screening colonoscopy to managing complex conditions like inflammatory bowel disease and liver disorders.

Now part of our team in Orange County, Dr. Hughes combines contemporary, evidence-based training with genuine compassion for every patient. He is dedicated to staying at the forefront of gastroenterology through continuing education and clinical research, ensuring his patients benefit from the latest advances in the field.
